Individual Project 2: Comic Book: Causality of Ableism

                                                     Artist Statement

The vocabulary of Ableism and subsequent causality is a predjudice deeply rooted and widely accepted in society remaining one of the most significant barriers to advancement for persons with disabilities. I have personally witnessed the results of ableist vocabulary in my daughter's struggle to accept herself when facing of barrage of intended and unintended insults pointing out the deficit and reminding her of the deficit daily. My design selection is bold and loud in font, colors, outlines, and patterns much like those who use ableist slurs. I use the definitions as support to help reveal the systemic orientation of the words of ableism. The comics show the casual way these words are used with the harm lurking in the background. I selected basic colors often used in comics and my comics focus mainly on the actions of the non-disabled, the frequent users of abelist terms.

I have to admit that I was not excited about this project. As a new In Design user and no experience with comics both reading and writing, I was dreading the process. However, Ironically...I enjoyed considering the theory of ableism from a comic perspective. The irony of how these words are used in a comic format creates a juxtaposition of the causality  by transferring the spectacle from the disabled to the non-disabled within this context, and I may continue to work on this and use this as a chapter of my dissertation.
